    İsmet Tatar

    (Painter, Paper Art, Installation, Collage)

İsmet Tatar is a versatile artist with her watercolor / acrylic paintings and her later interest in paper art, which she tries to introduce at the north of Cyprus. Despite we see examples from her practices on paper art in the collection, Tatar has many pieces of art from the periods when she used to work with traditional painting materials. The artist, who frequently deals with women in this period, associates women and, more specifically, mother figure with olive trees, which are the most characteristic elements of the geography in which she has grown, as a symbol of strength and survival despite all the difficult conditions. After a while, the artist started to use newspaper clippings, plants, and other similar items and started to attract attention with her collages and standalone installations. The artist forces the boundaries of paper and transforms it both chemically and physically in a way that is beyond knowledge.

Her interest in nature reflected through olive trees also appear in her later works through the use of earth tones in colors (her works of art in the collection are examples of the use of these colors)  and real materials such as soil, leaves, and twigs.
